Heidi Bernard, Registered Provisional Psychologist

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Assessment, CPC Clinics

I assess autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in children, teens, and adults at CPC Clinics. Each assessment combines a developmental history, the ADI-R interview, and the ADOS-2 observation. You receive a written report with clear next steps for home, school, or work. My assessment experience comes from hospital and school settings in Calgary.

What Heidi Assesses

Heidi assesses autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at CPC Clinics, for clients aged 3 and up. The steps adjust to the age of the person being assessed.

01 / Children

ASD Assessment for Children (3 to 12)

Child assessments look at social communication, play, and how a child handles change.

Heidi pairs the play-based ADOS-2 observation with a parent or caregiver interview. At Alberta Children's Hospital, she tested children aged 3 to 16 with the WPPSI-IV and WISC-V.

02 / Teens

ASD Assessment for Teens (13 to 19)

Teen assessments look at social demands at school and traits a teen may hide.

For most teens, the ADOS-2 relies more on conversation than on play. The final report can support accommodation requests at school or in post-secondary.

03 / Adults

ASD Assessment for Adults (20 and up)

Adult assessments rely on a self-reported history, the ADOS-2, and any earlier records you share.

Assessment still helps adults who have masked autistic traits for years. Reports can support workplace accommodation processes, depending on each employer's policies.

Heidi focuses on ASD assessment at CPC Clinics. Dr. Sebastian Saint leads ADHD and psychoeducational assessments.

Ask About an ASD Assessment

What an ASD Assessment Involves

An ASD assessment at CPC Clinics has 6 steps and about 18 to 20 clinical hours.

  • Intake (1 hour). Heidi reviews your concerns, your history, and the questions you want answered.
  • Document review (1 hour). Heidi reads previous reports and any records you choose to share.
  • ADI-R interview (3 hours). A structured interview covers early development, communication, and behaviour. A parent or caregiver usually answers it, and the format adapts for adults.
  • ADOS-2 observation (2 hours). A play- or conversation-based session shows social communication and flexibility in real time.
  • Report (10 to 12 hours). Heidi scores and interprets the results, then writes a plain-language report with any diagnosis and recommendations.
  • Feedback session (1 hour). Heidi explains each finding and how to share the report with a school, physician, or employer.

These times are a general guide. Your assessment may take more or less time, depending on its complexity.

How I Work

Every assessment draws on the same core methods, chosen to fit the person being assessed.

Standardized Assessment Batteries (WPPSI-IV, WISC-V, WIAT-III)

These tests measure reasoning, memory, and academic skills against age-matched norms.

ADI-R and ADOS

The ADI-R is a caregiver interview, and the ADOS-2 is a structured observation of social communication.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

ABA looks at what triggers and maintains a behaviour, then builds a plan around it.

Cognitive Behavioural Techniques

These link thoughts, feelings, and actions into practical coping steps.

Mindfulness-Based Interventions

Short attention and breathing exercises help a child or adult settle.

Family Systems Consultation

Recommendations reach the parents and teachers around the person assessed.

Neurodiversity-Affirming Practices

Reports describe strengths as well as challenges, in respectful language.
